50th Anniversary

To celebrate its birthday, cleaning expert Oreck has introduced a new upright vacuum cleaner, the XL Founders Edition. Founded by David Oreck in 1963, the company originally manufactured lightweight, powerful and durable upright vacuum cleaners for the American hotel industry, but its success led to public demand for the vacuums. Weighing just 4kg (half the weight of most uprights), the new design is easy to manoeuvre, with extra-long bristles that dig deep into carpet fibres to help lift pile and extend carpet life.

Vac Cleans Up

Staff at Exeter-based Integrity (Eurpoe) Ltd are celebrating after one of their products cleaned up at the 12012 House Beautiful awards.
The Oreck XL Graphite upright vacuum cleaner won the gold award for the Best Cleaning Product. Extremely light at 4.15kg, it's less than half the weight of most uprights, and uses only 350 watts of power, significantly less than the standard 1,4000 to 2,000 watts, making it eco-friendly as well as cost-effective.
With its highly-effective brush roll and two speed power options, the XL Graphite can remove deeply-embedded dust and pet hair to lift and restore carpet pile and help extend carpet life.
Alison Robinson of Integrity (Europe) Ltd said: "We're absolutely delighted to have been awarded the gold medal. Xl Graphite's new-style ergonomic handle reduces stress and strain on back, arms and wrists, making vacuuming easier and quicker, and its self-seal filter bag takes just seconds to change and traps an enormous 10 litres of dirt"

Oreck Fills a Vacuum, Neatly

I would never claim to have the tidiest of motorhomes, but here's something that could set you on your way to domestic bliss. It's the Deluxe handheld Vac from Oreck, a US company that's been making such products since 1963.
The model here is particularly good for motorhomes. It has a low 500 wattage, weighs just 2.3kg and stands some 40cm tall. Yet, it packs one heck of a (sucker) punch. It comes complete with an extendable pipe and a selection of four tools. There's even a shoulder strap for a bit of extra portability (should you wish to vac' and go, presumably).
The 'on-board cord storage' description is slightly misleading: there are actually grooves on the main body where you can wrap the mains lead (all 6m of it, then you'll need to tuck the plug, if you're determined to be really tidy). Already i'm finding it easier to leave the telescopic section at home and just take the shorter floor, bristle and crevice tools only - they all affix to the main unit for neat storage.
I'm definitely impressed by its overall performance and ability to get some of the typical nooks and crannies that can be beyond a conventional domestic size model. Like many top vacuum cleaners, it uses HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air)filtration - great news if you have nay kind of dust allergies - and, although they only have a one-litre capacity, you can order bags online via the company's UK base in Devon.
It's priced at £139.99 and backed by a three-year manufacturer's warranty. I've cleaned a few motorhomes in my time, but things are about to get a whole lot easier.

Tried and Tested

Steam Clean
Lightweight and easy to use, the Oreck Steam-Glide Mop cleans without the use of chemicals or detergents. You simple add water, turn it on and steam is created, which removes the dirt and cleans virtually all hard floors. it might seem unusual not to add any cleaning products when using this machine, but it does actually do a fantastic job of cleaning the floor just with the use of steam. It can be used on everything from linoleum, vinyl and sealed hardwood, to ceramic, marble and stone. It also does a pretty good job of refreshing carpets, although it is not specifically a carpet cleaner and doesn't get rid of stubborn marks; the steam process simply lifts surface dirt and leaves the carpet looking brighter. The easy-to-manoeuvre three-point head gets in and out of tight spots and around obstacles with ease. it uses high-quality microfibre floor pads that fit over the head, which are re-usable and washable in a normal washing machine cycle, so there's no need to buy additional pads.
Top tip: Wait for the green light to come on, which tells you that the water is at the optimal temperature for efficient cleaning.

Overview: Graphite is the latest addition to Oreck's family of upright vacuums. it has a uniquely designed brush roll with extra long, soft, angled bristles that push deep into the base of the carpet to dig out dirt and grit, lifting it to the surface. Strong suction then pulls this into the self-sealing HEPA filtration bag, while odour protection in the bag fights nasty whiffs. The XL Graphite comes with a six-year full parts and labour manufacturer's warranty.
Verdict: The suction power of the Graphite was excellent... it seemed to pick up dirt effortlessly. the lead length is good and the whole thing is very compact. Overall this is the lightest vacuum cleaner I have ever used and it was very easy to manoeuvre...

Oreck XL Uprights come with a free portable.

Oreck has introduced its new range of XL upright vacuum cleaners. The company has been producing domestic cleaners for 40 years and says that its new range is packed with new ideas to make cleaning easier.

There are three models in the XL range, the XL3 at £299, the XL5 at £349 and the XL10 at £429. Generous manufacturer's warranties of three, five and 10 years respectively are offered, and the upright cleaners are sold as a dual cleaning system, with a handheld portable multi-vac included in the price. A year's supply of dust bags is also included.

Says Alison Robinson, Oreck's marketing manager: "We are all very excited about the new range of upright XL vacuum cleaners. The fresh styling and outstanding warranties, combined with Oreck's reputation for performance and ease of use, make the XL series a very attractive propostion for both retailers and consumers alike."

Oreck claims for its XL models the virtues of lightness (around 4.2kg), excellent peformance and low energy usage. Each model features special brush rolls to pick up dirt right into corners and a direct suction path, which the company says helps ensure no loss of power.

The cleaners also adjust automatically to the type of floor to ensure excellent cleaning on carpets and hard floors.

Its HEPA filtration system and anitbacterial dust-lock bags are also designed to ensure they are well suited to allergy sufferers, while the XL5 and XL10 models are said to be ideally suited to pet owners.

The XL3 and XL5 come with the standard handheld multi-vac (£99 when purchased separately), which has shoulder strap for ease of use and a set of nine attachments to get into all those awkward nooks and crannies. Its six-metre chord also makes it ideal for the car.

The XL10 model comes with the deluxe handheld multi-vac (£129 when purchased separately), which boasts enough power to pick up a 16lb bowling ball and can also be used as a blower.

You cannot get more defiantly old school than the Oreck XL7. This traditional American upright cleaner looks like something from Stepford Wives.
It is a lightweight, but sturdy workhorse, and energy consumption is lower than many vacuum cleaners because its design focuses on the use of powerful brushes rather than suction.
There are no accessories weighing it down either. Instead, it comes with a separate small canister vacuum for cleaning furniture and curtains.
But the XL7's most fun gadget is a nifty headlight that lets you see the dirt it is about to suck up.
